A millionaire is sitting in his chauffeured Rolls Royce, stuck in traffic on Pall Mall. He looks out of his window and sees a tramp on the side of the road. The tramp spots him too, and starts shuffling up towards the car. Before too long the tramp is right next to the window, knocking on the glass. Reluctantly the millionaire rolls down the window, the tramp smiles and says,

‘Hey! Hey Billy it’s me Ned, do you remember? We used to sit next to each other in Mrs Williamson’s class!’

The millionaire recognises the man and replies, rather reluctantly, ‘Oh…oh yeah hi.’

‘Listen, Billy, I don’t s’pose you happen to have any change on you? Times are just a bit tough at the moment, as you probably guessed!’

Says the tramp with a little smile, plucking at his dirty clothes. The millionaire shuts his eyes and takes a deep breath, then he turns to the tramp and says, demurely,

‘“Neither a lender nor a borrower be.” William Shakespeare.’

As he says it the light turns green and his car pulls away – except the light doesn’t stay green for very long and the car only makes it about a dozen yards. The tramp ambles back up to the car, and he knocks on the glass again. The millionaire winds down the window again, extremely reluctantly this time, and the tramp leans in and says,

‘“Cunt.” D H Lawrence.’
